TERRACE END SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of-'the Terrace End School Committee was held last evening. Mr S. H. Sncll prodded, and Messrs M. O'Reilly, 11. Ware. W. A. Sutton and A. J. V'ortt were also present. Tho chairman welcomed Mr Sutton, who took his seat for the first time, the compliment being' fittingly acknowledged. Mrs E. T. Rowlands, Victoria street, wrote thanking tho' committee for its expression of .sympathy in the loss of her son. The headmaster (Mr F Fairbrothcr) reported as follows: —Number on roll 646, number of times open 46, average attendance 585, tho highest attendance 604. The daily attendance is now taxing the space to such an extent that some effort should immediately bo .made to extra space for the classes. The matter is referred to in the inspector's report, which is before you, but more than mere mention of tho want is needed to secure action being l undertaken at once to remedy the state of things. Immediate attention is necessary to improve sundry matters (pointed out to :lie visiting member), and which have boon referred t,o in former reports, viz., leakage of pipe, windows, blinds, seats, sheds, bubble fountains, etc Illness has accounted for the absence of the following members of (lie staff:— Misses CWen, Mackie, Porteous. Gowrlv and Buchanan. Tho lastnamed has beer, absent since November 1, and will not be lit to resume until the 19lh instant. Some cricket, material is required. and I would be glad if the committee could make a grant for the purpose. It was decided to vote £3 for the purchase of cricket bats. Mr Yortt reported for the visiting committee, and stated that some of the rooms w.'i'O greatly overcrowded. In some cases three pupils were using or trying to use a desk genor.illv occupied by two, and it was impossible to do good work under these conditions. It wits decided to invite the local members of the Education Board to visit _ the Kchooi, so thai they may be in a position in impress the urgent request for additional accommodation upon tho Board. Tho secretary was instructed to write the Railway Department regarding the annual school picnic in February next, and to report, to next meting. . Messrs Snell and Sntto.i were appointed a visiting committee tor the ensuing month.
