M. PAINLEVE'S DECLARATION.

"THE GREATNESS OF THE PERIL." LLOYD GEORGE AND THE NEW WAR COUNCIL. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. PAH IS, Nov. 13. . M. Painleve, welcoming Lloyd George at a luncheon, declared that, by every railway and all other routes French and English soldiers with guns and munitions were being hurried across the Alps to assist Italy. He, said:—"Help will not fall short of the greatness of the peril. 1 need not speak of help when it is a matter of helping brother peoples who have resolved to make every sacrifice for a common ideal. There must be one front, one army, one nation. Upon such a programme victory depends." .Mr Lloyd George, "replying to M. Painleve, referred to the new War Council, lie said they unfortunately had not had time to consult America and Russia before forming the Council. The Italian disaster necessitated prompt action on the part of those Powers whose forces were readily available to assist Italy. It was imperative that all the Allien' bo represented in order to ensure the success of the great enterprise in Italy, which was essential io victory. They had now commenced to obtain the Russo-Aniericap consent and co-operation. "Let us be just," he said, "to Russia, which is suffering from a violent fever as a result of her past atrocious r misgovernmenfc. She is winning her way to a steadier, cleaner health than ever she enjoyed. We should not forget what she did in the earlier davs of the war, when her heroic sacrifice helped to save France and Italy. What, then, was the reason tho Allies today were not much further along the road to victorv?- The' fault has been entirely due to the absence of real unity m the Allied direction of the war. We all felt the need of it, but we' had never vet achieved it, each country being left to its own devices."
