BAINESSE SCHOOL.

A school building at Bainesse, which ' has been in use for years, is too small lor the ‘lO children who attend, tor some time endeavours have been made to have some additions and improvements made to the building. Hut there are unusual difhculties in the way. Hie. building is on land which is either a road or*a railway reserve. That point, apparently is not settled, though evidence available leans to support the view that it is a road. The Manawatii County Council (says the Fox ton Herald) has done its best to help the requirements of tho school, and arranged t 0 transfer the piece of land to the Kducation Board, this step being asked for by the Board before improvements would lio made, dhe Railway Dopait'incut also agreed to the transfer of any interests it might have in the land. It was necessary to insert a clause in the “Washing-up Bill" iu enable the transfer lo bo made, and Mr It. Newman, .M.8., working in conjunction with Mr W. li. Field, M.R., took steps to have this done. But at the very last minute a hitch occurred which has delayed the i transfer till next session. The .Minister of Education wrote to IMr Newman, stating that the Wanga- ' mii Education Board had made no application to the Department for the 1 establishment of a school at Bainesse, : and for this reason the Lands Departj merit was notified that the Education i Department could not recommend the | proposed legislation. It is evident, on this statement, that the Education Department is not aware that there is already a school at Bainesse, with 40 children in attendance, although it has been paying the salary of the teachers for years. Correspondence setting ont this position was laid before the meeting of the IManawatn C.C. on Tuesday, when great disappointment was expressed at the delay, which it was seen was wholly duo ot the bungling of some officers in the Education Department.
