ANOTHER DISASTROUS FIRE
TWENTY SHOPS DESTROYED. BUSINESS QUARTER OF OHAKUNE RAVAGED. (Peb Puf.ss Association.) TAIIIAPE. Nov. 7. A disastroul fire occurred at Ohakuno originating in the Defence Office, at twelvethirty this morning. Twenty shops and their contents in the business centre of the town were completely destroyed. In the absence of water and fire-fighting facilities, the fire brigade and the public were holplesin stemming the flames. A stiff breeze earned the lire till there wa s nothing furthci to burn in its course, find nothing remains but a mass of charred and smouldering wreckage. The insurances are not known, but the damage will run into live figures. The origin of the lire is unknown. The buildings destroyed are those of Lyttle's (painter's shop and dwelling). Gould, solicitor; Goodman, confectioner's shop and dwelling; Anderson, second-hand dealer, shop and dwelling; Forsyth, bookseller's shop and dwelling; three unoccupied shops; Mrs Hook, confectioner's shop and dwelling; Hutler, drapery and storeroom; Ah Duckking, grocer's shop arid dwelling ; Coffcv, billiard room and dwelling, hairdressing saloon, and tobacconist's shop; Turner's shop, two smithy shops; Lee, ('hong, fruiterer: Keily's shop; defence office ami gymnasium j Allen and Co., butchers; one empty shop; Curiningha.me, chemist. Hutleir'jj drapery was tint best -hop ill town. The lire set the bush alight, which is still burning-.
