I (From Odr Own Correbpondent.) OTAKI, Nov. 5. At the lust sitting of the Levin S.M, Gourt Mat iSulian was charged with having unlawfully exposed liquor for sale on Sunday, October 21. D. Hannan and A. Barnett were charged with being found on licensed premises on the same date, ( onstable Hague gave evidence of haying called at the hotel, and on hearing voices, knocked, but was admitted for two minutes. The slide leading into the bar was open, while Damian, who was under the influence of liquor, said he would make his explanation to the Magistrate. For the defence it was alleged the bar was opened by Mrs Sulian as she passed out from the office, and that Barnett was in Ihe hotel for the purpose ot getting a tobacco pouch which he had lost and which Sulian had found. The Magistrate gave the licensee the benefit of the doubt, the other two defendants were each lined 10s and costs 7s. Annie Doogan was similarly charged, while George Banks was charged with being illegally on licensed premises. The S.M. dismissed the case against Mrs Doogan, hut fined Banks 40s and costs. Another jnateli for the Pcarcy U’np ami brooches took place on Saturday, when Bates, Law, 11. Bright and Satherley wore beaten by Ay re, Knight, A. Bright and 01 liver, by 19 to 13. Young, Kirk, Witched and Smith (o) got a drubbing at: the hands of a Levin howling rink —Lancaster, Mclntyre, Porteons and Fyko (5), that the score-card is unavailable —probably torn in fragments and scattered to the four winds of heaven. Ihe rinks represented the Otaki and Levin Social Clubs. A deliberate attempt at burglary evidently by an amateur —was made at . Mr T. D. King’s business premises last night. A chisel had evidently been used, as the, door shows marks as made by tiich an instrument., while part of the Vide Jock wins partly prized off. The burglar, however,, failed in his object. This is not. the fust time such an attempt has been made on the premises. ... Nominations of candidates for the I lorowheuua County Council close to-morrow. In view of the retirement of several Councillors a number of new representatives will be elected. Very little interest attaches itself to the southern portion of the comity, but in the northern end there, is likely to be he keen competition. A number of residents of the V irokino Biding desired a meeting of ratepayers to discuss county mailers. The meeting was enlivened, hut strange to relate wasonlv attended hv five ratepayers, two of whom were County Councillors, and a reporter. Messrs Alex. Murray and A. S.
