THE MEMBER FOR GREY.
Mr P. C. Webb’s resignation has not yet reached the Speaker in tho form in which it can bo accepted, and, while enquiries made by a “Standard” representative in Wellington indicate that more than one West Coast gentleman is prepared to contest the electorate in' the interests of tho National Government, it is very unlikely any announcement will be made on tho subject until Mr Webb’s intentions are finally disclosed. The letter forwarding Mr. Webb’s conditional resignation being informal (as ruled by tho. Speaker), must bo followed up by the direct act of resignation, which has yet to materialise.
Tho Dunedin Star states that it is practically certain that neither the Reform Party nor tho Liberal Party will run a candidate at the by-election for Grey.
(Special to "Standard.”) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5.
The resignation of P. C. Webb, member for Grey, Las not yet reached the Speaker of the House of Representatives in proper form. Mr Webb definitely intends to resign, however, and your correspondent gathered that ho does not wish to contest the byelection, which may not be held in any case until after the dato_ fixed for his appearance in camp. Candidates for the seat are being mentioned, but the intentions of the National Government, or of the two parties that oppose it, are not yet known.
