Air 11. K. Troutbeck, of Hawke’s Bay, owner of Form Up (who won the Stewards’ Handicap at. Christchurch yesterday) and Elocution; has been drawn in the first ballot ,of the Second Division.

Air E. Lynam, of the Group Area staff, ■and secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, lias been confined to his room for some weeks on account of illness. ’ A vote of sympathy wits passed to him at last night’s meeting of the Association. Airs Howell, senr., a very well-known resident of Paraparaumu, died suddenly last night, after being seized with a fit of coughing. Deceased was one of the most highly respected residents of the district. She leaves a husband, a large family—among the number Cr. W. J. Howell—to mourn their loss. Prior to the commencement of the Kairanga County Council meeting to-day, a motion of sympathy was passed to Cr. M. A. Moody, whose son has been wounded, and Mr A. M. W’right (county engineer), whose brother lias also been wounded, and those county residents whose relatives have recently been casualtied. Councillors D. Collis and M. A. Moody were nominated at to-day’s Council meeting to represent the Kairanga County Council on the Palmerston North Hospital Board. Sir Jas. Wilson, Messrs J. K, Hornblow and H. H. Hunt, have been nominated to represent the "Alanawatu County Council, Foxton Borough, and Town Board of Kongotea respectively on the Hospital Board. The many friends of the family will regret to learn that Sergt. Alex McDonald has made the supreme sacrifice, ho having been killed in action on October 21. The late Sergt. McDonald was. a sou of Mrs C. L. McDonald, of Rainnai, and left Now Zealand with the 21st Reinforcements. His brother Richard is in camp at Trontham. The late Sergt. McDonald was well-known in the Pohangina and Palmerston districts and was highly esteemed. Mr Sydney 11. Jolly, eldest son of Mrs E. Jolly, 235 Church street, has been appointed sergeant to No. 1 troop ’Auckland Mounted. Rifles, 34th Reinforcements, and expects to be leaving New Zealand shortly. Sergt. Jolly, who is a South African veteran, previous to being called in the ballot, had been twice turned down owing to defective sight, but. since being in camp has succeeded in securing the rifleman’s badge. Previous, to entering camp ho was engaged in farming in the Rotorua district.

Private advices from Christchurch record the death or. Saturday of Mr Herbert Boon, late of the Evening Post literary staff. The deceased was a son of Mr J. W. Boon, of Christchurch, and commenced his newspaper career with the Christchurch Press. Ho afterwards joined the Auckland Star, and four years ago came to \\ ellington to join the Post. His death was unexpected. Ho had boon attached to the Press Gallery staff for his paper, and at the end of the session left last Thursday on a holiday for Christchurch. Mr Boon was well liked in press circles. Some time ago he volunteered for service, but was rejected on account ot an affection of the heart. Mr Johji Gotty, an old resident of Bulls, who died on Thursday evening, was born at Taupo about 1847, during the troublous times of the native wars. At this time his father had left Taupo, and was in Wanganui engaged in contracting for the Imperial troops. After the birth of the deceased, his _ mother, who belonged to the Ngatituwharotoa and Ngatitoa tribes (who were fighting against the British) brought him down on her back from Taupo to this side of the Wanganui river, and the news was conveyed in some way to Gotty senr., and he obtained leave from the military commandant, Major Patiense, to cross the river, which, in company with the late Edward Churton, he did, and brought back Mrs Gotty and her son to lus home in Wanganui. While John Gotty was still a child, he was given in charge of the Rev. Marshall, and eventually he went to Nelson College and later to Europe, where his education was completed.
