PTOMAINE POISONING.

Mr Arthur E. B. Turner, who died suddenly at- the residence of his fu.thcr-in-luw, Mr Ofo, Coloy, Himatangi, on Monday, was in Fox ton on Saturday, when lie wppcurcd to be in his usual health. The late Mr Turner married a daughter of Mr Ooley about ten years ago, and prior to engaging in farm work at Himatangi was employed on one of (ho river boats as an engin-.'er. He was of a quiet disposition, and held in high esteem by all who knew him. Much sympathy has been expressed for Mrs Turner, who at the time of her late husband's death was visiting his relatives in the South Island. At the inquest it was stated that deceased became ill <>u Sunday morning about eleven o'clock while working at the separator, ami was at. once put lo bed by his mother-in-law, who was unremitting in her attention to him. Mrs Ooley was most anxious to send for a doctor, but deceased refused to have one, stating that he would be alright. As he did not improve during the night Mr Coloy summoned a doctor from Foxton who' after seeing the patient, decided to obtain further medical advice, and a doctor front Pultiiersion was obtained. The two medical men, as the result of a consultation, decided that Mr Turner was suffering from ptomaine poisoning, but though they did all they could for the patient, he gradually sank and passed away about two o'clock on Monday afternoon. From the evidence it was ascertained that the supper deceased had in Foxton on Saturday night included tinned cheese, while his breakfast on Sunday morning comprised boiled porridge, boiled schnappcr, bread and butter, and tea. It was thought, that the cheese might have been the cause of the illness, though that fact was hard to determine, as ptomaine, the doctor said, would not manifest llscll until from 12 to 48 hours afterwards, although sometimes, of course, much quicker, depending upon the state of the intestines at the time. As stated in yesterdays issue She Ooromr returned a verdict that death v.as due to ptomaine poisoning.
