Harold Batten, charged as cabled on October 17, has been committed for trial. The police produced a number of extraordinary letters referring to the sinking of .ships falsifying discharges. [Batten was charged in connection with a mysterious fire that occurred on a steamer lying at Miller’s Point, with forging a seaman’s discharge certificate. When ho was arrested the police found a quantity of gelignite, dynamite, detonators and fuses, as well as correspondence relating to explosions on ships in his possession.] Received October 31, 9.0 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 31. A fire destroyed Barclay and Co.’s box factory at Loichardt. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO.
