TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Old Dannevirko residents settled throughout different portions of New Zealand will have learned with regret of the devastating tiro that swept the business heart of trie town on October 22. Reports published through the Press Association have fully outlined the enormous extent of the damage, and therefore it is unnecessary to enter into distressing detail. Only those who know Dannevirko can fully realise how deeply our townspeople have suffered. Splendid efforts arc being made to commence life over again on shattered business sites, but in the ease of those who have lost their all the lire calls for the friend in need to prove the friend indeed. In spite of the multifarious war calls to which our town and district have so liber ally responded, money has been liberally subscribed for the assistance ol those stricken by the tire. The local desire is to hold our people together. Amongst your many readers there may bo old Dannevirke residents who recall to their personal profit the amazing’ growth of the town from the time it was surrounded by bush. If former residents fool prompted by old associations to lend a helping hand in ilycrcommg the present setback and relieving ur-r-e'nt need, contributions will bo thankfully received by the town clerk, Dannevirko, or the undersigned.— We. are, etc., E.
