THE MEAT TRUST.

QUESTION OF LEGISLATION. (Fbox Odb Pabliamentaby Ripqbmb.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. Replying to several questions regarding meat in the House to-day, Mr Massey said that the. existing legislation gave the Government sufficient power to give effect to the recommendations of the Meat Trust Committee, but it was possible that additional legislation would be required next session. He made an indefinite reply to a request for an assurance that huge profits would not again be made on New Zealand meat after it reached the United Kingdom. The arrangements were now much better than last, year, and he did not think that the Meat Trust would bo able to handle more than a share of INew Zealand meat. Very little mutton and no beef would go on the open market, and a fair distribution would be made among the retailers. He and Sir Joseph Ward had protested against the high profits allowed on released meat, but they had been told politely by the Imperial authorities that New Zealand had nothing to do with the matter, since the meat had been DOUghtg and paid for here by Great Britain.
