At SI. Paul's Methodist Church to-mor-row evening Miss Knight, of Lower llutt, will sing "There is a Ureeii Hill." In by-elections at Home, Sir E. Gcddos was returned unopposixi for Basingstoke and Major 801 l (Liberal) for Spalding. At the installation of officers of Lodge United Manawatu, E.G., on, Tuesday evening, Bro. T. W. Moodie was elected W.M. Mr W. R. Frost, enjrineor to the Kaitieke County Council, has been appointed assistant engineer to the Palmerston Borough Council. Mr John Blundell (senior proprietor of the Evening Post) and Mrs Blundell celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding yesterday. Mr W. E. Burley, of Feilding, has been appointed assistant agricultural instructor to the Tnranaki Education Board, in succession to Mr 11. G. Sergei, resigned. A tablet to the memory of the late Private Henry Sorenecn is to be unveiled at the service in the Longburn Methodist Church to-morrow afternoon. Lev. J. 11. Huelam will preach a memorial germon. The nominee of Victoria University College for the Rhodes, Scholarsliip this year is 11. A. Mackenzie, a son of Professor Mackenzie. Sir Francis Bell read to the Legislative Council on Wednesday a letter from the Speaker (Hon. 0. J. Ho graduated at Bartholomew's Hospital, and did house duty prior to joining the R.A.M.C. on the outbreak of war. He is now enjoying good health (after some exciting experiences in the trenches) and a well-earned rest. Mrs Maguire accompanied him.

A pleasant gathering in the form of a surprise party took place at Kelvin Grove last evening, when friends assembled at the residt nco of Mr and Mr> C. K. Pees. senr.. to farewell them on the eve of their departure from the district, also to show appreciation of the good work of Mrs Pees as organist at the Presbyterian Sunday servicer held at the hall during the last 12 months. This was expressed in a tangible form, a beautiful vase and scent bottle being presented to -Mrs Pees, the recipient responding very feelingly. A happy evening was brought to a conclusion with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The following took part in making the evening a success : Mr. Mrs and Miss McHardie, Mrs Gawith, Mrs and Mis.s Gray, Mrs and Misses Buchanan, and Master G'ibbs (2).

Prince Bornhard Henry Martin Charles Von Bulow, who has been mentioned as Dr. Michaclis's successor in the Gorman Chancellorship, is a Prince of the Kingdom of Prussia, a Major-General in the German Imperial Forces, and a member of iho House of Peers of Prussia. He was born at Klein-Flottbeok, Holstom, on May 3, 1849, and is thus in his 69th year. The eldest son of the lato Bornhard Ernest Von Bulow, Prussian Minister of State and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the German Empire, he entered the Prussian regiment of Royal Hussars for the campaign of 1870 against France, and served in that regiment as lieutenant until 1572. He was Attache in the Foreign Office at Berlin till 1874; Attache at Rome, 1874-75; promoted to bo Secretary of Legation, December, 1875; Secretary at the Embassies of Pctrograd and Vienna, 1876; Charge d'Affaires at Athens, 1877; Secretary of the Berlin ConK ress. 1878: second and afterwards first Secretary of the Embassy at Pans, 187984- First Secretary at the Embassy at Pctrograd. 1684-88; Minister at Bukarcst, 1888-93; Ambassador at Homo, 1893-9(; Minister of State and Secretary for J'orvvni Affairs, 1897-1900; German Imperial Chancellor and Prussian President of the Council of Ministers, 1900-09.
