During the hearing of the Carroll courtmartial ease yesterday afternoon, Mr A. M. Onglcy, counsel for accused, criticised the constitution of tho Court, and remarked that no less than fourteen officers were engaged in trying one man for alleged desertion. Colonel McDonald, president of thu Court, said that three of tho officers present were territorial officers who wore iheni simply to learn court-martial procedure, and were taking no part in the trial at all. Tho officers engaged in the trial had to do this work it; addition to their ordinary duties. The trial was a little extra work put»upprt tho officers. Mr Ongley: Then the officers should not be asked to do it. A member of the Y.M.C.A. staff in London writes:—"A very valuable adjunct to the work of the Y.M.C.A. with the, NewZealand troops at the front is the travelling kitchen motor-van donated by Mr Percy McHardy, ol Palmerston North. In gratitude for the generosity of the donor and for the free refreshments supplied from it, it has been christened by the boys, "Buckshoe Mac." The van has done excellent service as a means of transport, and alv> in enabling the Association to carry out ninny "Buckshee stunts" when the men have been on tiie march. The New Zealand Division is s.o mobile that it- is imperative for the Association to have means of getting about; the country quickly, and '"Buckshoo Mac" is now an indispensable part of its organisation." That she was "suffering hell on earth 1 ' was the burden of a complaint made to tho Gisborne Borough Council tit its last meeting by a lady resident of that town. In course of her letter .-lie stated that during the past eighteen months boys in the vicinity (if her home hud made her life a thing of torture by throwing stones and, in other ways annoying her. She further alleged thai her tormentors had injured a valuabla horse and had killed a cow and five fowla belonging to her. The complainant declared that the reason for this conduct on the part of the l>oys was that they believed she bore a German name, but this she indignantly repudiated, declaring that her name was Swedish, and that she was Eng-lish-born. Tho Council referred the letter to the police.

A resident of Lyttelton has in his possession an improvised explosive bullet found in the bandolier of a captured Turkish sniper by his son, who is fighting with the New Zealand forces in Palestine. The device has been made by cutting out half of trio lead from an ordinary sporting rifle cartridge, and inserting a detonator. The bullet iiad been carried for safety in the sheath of a regular Turkish service cartridge. A bullet of this kind, fired at a distance of from 500 to 700 yards, would explode on impact with terrific force, inflictinsr a frightful wound. The sniper, in choosing fof this device a bullet such as might be used in deer-stalking, was evidently actuated by the fact that the comparatively soft report; from sporting ammunition would make hia detection more difficult, and also that what was lost in the length of range was mora than compensated for in effectiveness.

An ingenious machine, really a. land torpedo, has been invented by Mr R. 0. Lindsay, a returned soldier, a son of Colonel Lindsay, of Timaru, and a private demonstration of the invention was given to a number of well-known citizens (says tha (liristchurch Press). The machine when fully constructed will weigh about lOcwt, including its freight, and will be constructed as to be impervious to bombs, rifle, or machine gun tire. It will possess the great advantage of being cheap, and its inventor claims that once the necessary material can be procured between £6O and £BO will cover the cost of each machine. MajorGeneral Sir Alfred Robin saw the model at work, and informed the inventor thab if he would construct a full-sized working 1 model he would be given every opportunity to demonstrate its worth at Trentham, where a miniature battlefield and "no-man'a land" would be constructed, and the land torpedo would lx;, given a lair trial under: real war conditions.
