A COMMENDABLE SCHEME, A sell emu is on foot for the establishment ol a iminlx'r of scholarships, to he known as the Trentham Scholarships, the object ol their creation being- to perpetuate the memory ot the fallen soldiers of this conntry long after the war clouds have disappeared frent the, horizon. Rotter, camp commandant at Trentham, is taking an active part in promoting- the ■scheme, to assist which a hook entitled "Historic Trentham," a valuable record of the 1 rent ham camp, is being- published, and will shortly be on sale, and it will probably lie available at the Palmerston Show next week. As it is essential that, (he price should he kept at a reasonable figure, the margin of profit for the provision o! scholarships is not anticipated as being in adequate ratio to either the sentimental or intrinsic worth of the publication. and if has therefore bjen decided, in deference to the wishes of a number of influent ltd supporters of the project, to accept donations as subsidiary to the profits from the sale ot the book. The fund for the scholarships will bo vested in Major-General Robin, Dr. W. J. Anderson (Director of Education), and C'olonel Tot tor as trustees. The conditions; governing the award of the scholarships provide that these shall be made by the trustees, and, except as provided, shall be held on the same conditions. as the Junior and Senior National Scholarships. The value of the scholarships shall Lie the same as the value of the Junior and Senior National Scholarships respectively. The scholarships shall ho awarded to those boys who stand next in order of merit to those who have obtained Junior and Senior National Scholarships: (a) Being sons of soldiers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who htt-vo been killed during the war with Germany which commenced on August 4, 11/14 ; (hj) being sons of members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who have been on active service during the war named; or failing a sufficient number of such candidates : (e) being sons of members of the military forces of tliT** British Empire who have been on active service during the said war, and were at the time of enlistment domiciled in New Zealand; or, failing a sullieienl number of such candidates; (d) being sons of members of any other branch of His Majesty- forces, who were on active service during the same war, if domiciled in New Zealand at the time of enlistment: or, failing such candidates: (e) being sons of members of any of (he New Zealand naval or military forces. In regard to residence ami in all other respects, the candidates must eonform to ihi' regulations for Junior or Senior National Scholarships, as the case may be. provided that a candidate shall be held |o l>e qualified for the scholarships it lie obtains aggregate marks in the examinn lion not lower than 5 per cent of the pos slide maximum below the standard lived for the Junior or Senior National Scholarships, as the case may be. Provided that if jmv candidate has held a Junior Trenthani Scholarship and has qualified for a Senior Trentham Scholarship, such scholarship shall be awarded to him before the claims of any other candidate are considered. Provided aho 1 hat, subject, to the last proviso, (he number of Junior and Senior Trentham Scholarships shall be fixed by the trustees as nearly as possible in the proportion of two to one, so far as (be (tmds permit. If the funds are not snllicient for the award of scholarships to all the qualified candidates, they shall be awarded to those boys of Class (a), then those of Glass (hj), (e). (d).
