THE MOSQUITO FLEET.
MANNING SCALE TO BE REDUCED. STEAMERS MAY SOON MOVE. The Government has decided to suspend the manning scale for the mosquito fleet, now held up owing to a strike of the crews. This it lias power to do under the Shipping and Seamen’s Act of 1909. The Government is of opinion that the time has come when, in order to set tho boats going, the powers given under this Act should be employed. The Minister for Marino (the Hon. G. W. Russell) stated last night that in every case where ho was assured by the Marine Department that the manning scale could bo altered without risk to the public, he intended to sanction reduction. Applications had already been received, and it was probable that (he steamers would begin to move within the next day or two.
Arrangements were being made yesterday to man some of the idle steamers, with tho masters and mates of others, so that at least some of the vessels would l>e able to resume running.
