COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL.
. ■» PRESSING NEED FOR INCH EASED ACCOMMODATION. A special meeting of the. College street School Committee was field last evening to discuss the lack of accommodation at the school. Those present were Roy, Doull (chairman), Mer<dames Gill and Cesbb, Messrs R. Lo'Grarigb, Sanson, 1' Carville. J. K; Ellifi, and W. I). Low (headmas't'er), Rev. Doull said, the inspectors had been greatly impressed by the- need for more accommodation on their recfjn.l visit, and had decided to plnos the matter before the Board at. next. Wednesday's meeting, (Ie therefore considered it an opportune time. to put- in, a strong .request for a permuiont building. ' S6r/i« ; thing might be t;-nt to relieve the pressure on the infant departments, which had 200 on the roll. The West End whool had been built lour years ago to relievo the overcrowding at College street, and had token away 100, and this number hail been more than made up in tho interval. He considered that they should back up the inspectors' representations by a strong resolution, combining their needs. If the infant department was built separately, it should form part of the final plan of the whole new school. Mr Low said that the (resent a'N.rorr.ec was 534 and the school was o, Iv built to hold 422. the total excess being.'l 62,. The overcrowding was worst in t.e infant department.*, there being 34 in excess in prim"r A, 3! in primer 1. 60 in standard 2, and 21 each in standards f> and' 6. Mr Carville considered that, they should have tic infant department separate from the main buihiiuu; altogether; and to lie -< parate for all lime. After discus.-ion it was decided icai imously, on tho motion of Rev. i'hi'l. seconded by Mr l.O' Grange, to forward the following resolution to tie: Board 'immediately : "That. ill view _of the present overcrowded .condition of the College street school ihi.-s committee urges ihe Hoard to ai oneo tree: in brick an infant, department and make the -aid alteration- to the pr.-cnt school as will enable the standards to have requisite floor splice, lor a few years. The present toll number is 584 and the floor spa.:e accommodate..; only 422. Four, year; ago the Wist. End school was opened and took about 100 children from, College street, and this number has not only boon made up but exceeded. The committee would roquet fully fuggc-t that this infant dvpartment be erected, and in view of tin' rapidly growing school population, a;-' a part of a :ii al large school in brick or other permanent material, and that it be made detached ttorr the preterit building. The. c»>mniittOo wcnld thw the hion- forcibly for the sake of bettor, and for health reasons:, since Talmerston North has been subject to uiphthi-ria during the past year, and the lisk ot its spreading is intensified by an moiclouding school."
