The deceased, who .was 76 years of age, leaves a grown-up family of five. Among those killed in action on October 4, in the big attack the New Zealanders made in Flanders, was Corporal Noel McDonald. Ho left this country with the Ninth Reinforcements and had been in practically all the fighting with tho New Zealand troops in France. Lieut. M. B. Beattie, of the Berkshire Regiment, at the age of 21 years. Lieut. Beattie went to England in the early part of 1915 to take up the study of medicine, hut he heard tho call of duty, and joined tho colours. His untimely end removes a promising young New Zealander, and adds another to the long list of sacrifices this country has made on the field of battle. On Friday news was received hero fhafc a young Palmcrstonian, Private F. C. Mills, had been gassed and was seriously ill, but yesterday word came to hand tha.t he had succumbed. Tho deceased soldier," prior to joining the N.Z.M.C., was in the employ of Mr A. Levy. A first-class rifle shot, he represented the Linton Club in, many pf the big meetings at Trentham. He was a good sport generally, popular with numerous friends, who will learn of his death with deep regret.

The death occurred at the Old People’s Home, Awapuni, this morning of a Crimean veteran named Patrick Ashe, at tho ripe ago of 83 years. The deceased was a native of Artlone, Ireland, and enlisted there in 1852 in the 55th Foot Regiment. On returning to England, Mr Ashe was discharged in 1864. He came out to New Zealand in 1876, and for 35 years resided in tho Feilding district, where ho followed the occupation of gardener. The deceased has no relatives in the Dominion. Still another Palmerston officer has made tho big sacrifice in tho person of Lieut. KG. Smith, son of Mr W. H. Smith, of Boundary road, who has received official advice to this effect. Lieut. Smith was a capable journalist and discharged the duties of sub editor, under his father, in tho Manawatu Times and Marton Advocate. He enlisted _ early in the war, relinquishing a commission to get away with tho Second Reinforcement, but received his commission in Egypt. He returned to New Zealand, and joined the Twenty-first Reinforcements, and had been on tho West front some time before his death. There is, however, a possibility of a mistake being made, as there are two Lieut. K. G. Smiths on tha roll, and Lieut. Smith’s wife, who is ir» England, promised to cable if anything occurred, but so far no message has been received from her.
