DEALING WITH U-BOATS.

METHODS OF THE NAVY. WHAT MINE-SWEEPERS FOUND. LONDON, Sept. 30. Details published to-day indicate some of the methods in use for dealing with, enemy submarines. A torp«edo boat sighted a periscope 600 yards away. The captain swung his ship round, and when the submarine was only 50 yards distant the periscope disappeared. The torpedo boat passed ovjer the spot, and the impact of a oollisfon was felt. Two explosive charges were dropped, and patches of oil on the .surface indicated the result. In another instance, a torpedo boat observed the submarining of a steamer. The survivors were rescued, and the submarine 1 was located .by a white patch of water ahead. The torpedo boat steered straight for hi to spot, and its keel grazed the submarine. Three explosive charges dropped at the spot resulted in oil and air bubbles on the surface and a strong .smell of petroleum. In both of these cases minesweepers found heavy obstructions on the bottom. In a third case a. British submarine sighted an oneiWy sjubmariuo, and immediately dived. By means ot the periscope the emomj was picked up. and a torpedo was la unched at a range of 800 yards. A vie -lent explosion was hoard, and the British boat coming to the surface, was able to pick up some of the survivors of Bit ie enemy submarine, who stated that A he torpedo struck just before the couining tower, and the submarine idled -over and sank.
