THE ALAND ISLANDS AS A BASE Australian-New Zealand Cable Association Received October 16, 10.15 a.m. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 15. The Germans are expected to attempt to seize the Aland Islands and effect a landing in Finland before the ice forms, with a view to attacking Helsingfors. [The Aland Islands comprise a group o. 1 300 small islands and rocks at the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia, opposite Abo, tin* largest of them being situated about 2a miles off the Swedish coast. The largest ot ■ the islands, only 30 of which are populated, is called Aland, is 18 miles in length and j contains Bomarsund.’ The islands formerly i belonged, to Sweden, but were seized by Russia in 1809,]
