A DESERTER ARRESTED.

MEMBER OF CARROLL FAMILY. Francis Joseph Carroll, one of the three Carroll brothers who were called up last June, but who subsequently disappeared, was arrested on October 9, at Awaimi, Kaitaia, in the extreme north of the Auckland province. He had taken an assumed Hillin', and was passing himself oil" as an American citizen. The arrest was made by Constable Martin, of Kaitaia. Carroll was brought through to Palmerston North by the Auckland Express this morning and handed over to the military authorities, by whom he will bo dealt with. The case of the Carroll brothers attracted more than usual attention some months ago, on account of the defiant attitude taken up by them when before the Appeal Board. Two were ordered into camp and another was given leave for a month or so. The (ir-t two disappeared, and the remaining brother was then ordered to camp, but prior to the date of las taking up military training, he, too, left for parts unknown. 'The arrest just made is the first that has been heard of the absentees since their disappearance.
