POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

(Fr.oxt Gun Own Corhespondknt.) The monthly meeting of the I’ohnngina County Council was held on Saturday. I’rcsout- Cis. 11. W. Smart (chairman). N. 'J'. Becthum. 11. Port, P, E. Lewis and G. I''. Smith. The following correspondence was dealt wilh : Mr T. Waugh, Kimholton, wrote in respect to tin agreement with the county engineer, pending the construction of Black bridge, and pointed out that a certain gate which should have Keen erected in return for the right to cross the writer's property had net been erected --The engineer ex plained that tt lemportiry gate had been erected and removed, and the owner had been paid £5 for the use of the paddock.— The Council decided to reply to the efleet llial there was evidently some misunderstanding in the matter, as the Council only desired to lease the paddock. iMr .1. Passey notified lhat he intended jo erect, a fence in front of his section. As there were corners near a water-trough, the writer requested leave to run the fence straight. —Permission was granted to erect the fence on tin' roadline, subject to the engineer’s approval. ,\ similar decision was agreed upon in respect to a request from Mr C>. Bdletl, on the motion of Cr. Beelham, seconded by Cr. Port.

Passey called attention to the dangerous state of the road above his house, and pointed out that refuse thrown against the fence was forcing the hitter into the river, causing the bank to slip and stopping the water llow.—lt was re solved to point out that the slip was the cause of the block. A circular letter was received from the secrctarv to the New Zealand Counties’ Association, showing the advantages of an improved time-sheet for the use of cm plovecs, fur which a nominal tee was asked. 'The same body wrote stating that with a view to minimising the cost ot insuring workers against accident, it had been suggested that, the County Councils and Road Boards should establish a Mutual Accident and Insurance Association. It. also advised that the Minister for Internal Allah's had undertaken to place (he matte) before Cabinet, and would notify if Councils had power to do this or Jf legislation was necessary. The Depart merit stated that when the Council was notified that this and other reserves wen placed in the Pohangiita Valley, it was stipulated that all arrangements with re gat'd to them must he submitted to the Department before giving ell'ect, and tic Council was asked what arrangement had been made in the present ease.—The letter was received. The Minister for Finance tendered a letter of thanks to the Council for the part it took in making the War Loan a suecoss. . , .. The statement of the balance ol the Government subsidy on rales collected lor last year, amounting to £223 19s od. was U TREASURER’S REPORT. The treasurer (Mr R. AN. Lamb) renorted the following" balances:- County fund, dr. £1546 3s lid: No. 1 loan account, cr. £46 10s stl: cemetery account, cr. £ll 14' lid. The following collections have been made during' the month: Awahnu riding. £132 Os 5d ; Coal Creek riding, £9 17s 3d: Matmaono riding £79 Os 4cl; Mangaptkooiko riding, £4B 17s Id; Umutoi ruling, £222 16s; "total, £521 16s 2d. Rent ol reserves, £54 3s 6(1: driving fees, £2 Os; total £578 8s Bd. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £834 12s Cal were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT, Awahott Riding.—The roads in this riding arc in good order. Most, of the slips have been removed and the washout on No. 3 line has been attended to, Repairs to G, Hunt's bridge have been effected and a little protective work (lone above the bridge to prevent erosion. The timber is on the ground for the repairs to the arid ;es over the 0 te-Awa-te-Atna and Tokiawa streams. This work will be proceedi I with immediately. Coal Creek Riding.—The roads are in fair order: nothing' extra has been done in the riding during the month. The roadmen are attending to till that is required. Mangaono Riding.—The metal on the must of tho roads in this riding is getting very lit in. A little metalling has been done from the Rattmni hotel up the hill and a few chains along the flat, 147 yards having been put on at u cost of 5.s per yard. A start will be mafic next week metalling near the junction of the branch and the To Awa roads. A few chains uf protective works has been done above the Ramnui bridge; also a considerable amount of willow planting; and the fence repaired to keep the .stock off. Mangapikopiko Riding.—The foams are still engaged on the Apiti-N’orsewooil road, bu) as ihe hauling from now on wjl) he considerably shorter, greater progress will be made. Roadman otherwise attending to requirements. Pohangimi Riding,—The main roads are

in good order. Tho narrow place near Mr Passey’s has been widened, also the culvert near Mr S. Moar’s. This work is only temporary, hut may suffice until such times its the more important work of putting in the concrete culvert on To Awa road is completed. Tho material is a I ready on the ground, and a start will lie made with this work next week. A little work has been done on Denton’s road, but is not quite completed. Applications lor permanent roadman for litis riding were invited and will he before yon tor consideration to day. Tamaki Riding.—The roads in this riding are still very rough on the top end, but liavt been improved considerably during the past month. There are several narrow places which will have to be at tended to as soon as time and labour permits. The, lower end of the reserve litis been metalled, 256 yards having been pal on at a cost of 3s Id per cubic yard. Other portions of the riding require metalling as soon as the. teams are available. Willow planting at Diggers’ Creek and the new tilling on Handley s hill have been done. . . . , Umutoi Riding.—The majority ot 11 to roads in this riding require metalling. Provision should be made tor some ol this work to he done during Me summer months. Most of the slips have been temoved and several new pipe culverts have been put in. on the Apit i-Norsewood road. A little work has been done to make the road passable where, the road subsided on the Makoura road. The slip on the Ala - keikei road has been removed and tre (lie resumed. The old wooden culvert at the foot of McCulloch's hill has caved in and will shortly need replacing with a new structure.
