THE MARTIN MEMORIAL.

QUESTION OF GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. At tliis morning’s meeting of (lie Palmerston Hospital Board, the chairman (Sit Janies Wilson) referred to the Martin Mom orial, and the question of securing the Government subsidy. When the committee from the Board had met the-Minister ol Public Health ho had given an assurance that the subsidy, if necessary, would be forthcoming, and had urged the Board te go on '.villi the work. They had therefore got in touch with Dr. Stowe, in England, and apparatus and machinery had been ordered, but now there was some doubt, about the subsidy, as the financial affairs of the Government were now in the hands of the Minister of Finance. There was a sum of £2OOO in the hands of the Memorial Committee, so that unless they got the subsidy they would be unable to go on with the erection unless the public subscribed further. The chairman said the Board should press the matter to a conclusion, and use every effort to secure the subsidy. Mr J. A. Nash moved: “That in the opinion of this Board the Martin Memorial must be considered as part of the first building scheme, and that Dr. Yalintinc bo requested to endeavour to include same.” . Dr. Whitaker seconded the motion, and said it, was a great pity the matter was being delayed. The Board should strongly back up the motion, and press the matter to a successful conclusion, and thus eliminate any further delay. The motion was carried.
