. , DUNEDIN. Sept 10. In tue Port Chalmers Police Court to-day a woman named Emily Duekmanton and a girl aged 15 years were charged witii cruelly ill-trrnting two cows, the pro|iertv of Kate Beatrice Johnstone, by applying some blistenn.j preparation to their teats. A plea of not guilty was entered.

The evidence for the prosecution showed that complainant, who resides at Portobello and whose husband is at tho Dardanelles, had given Mis Duekmanton permission to dri.-c cows through her paddock, but the privilege was withdrawn owinj; to it being abused On August 19. complainant found the teats of the cow s blistered by some irritant, which caused them severe suffering and s< rioiisly affected their value.

The girl accused admitted putting' sonic ointment on the cows' teats lor a lark, at the instigation of tho older accused, but M.s pucknianton denied having taken any part in the incident. Thy case against Mrs Duekmanton was diMi.iss'M.l, but the girl was convicted and remanded till Thursday for sentence.
