Though some mines have conceded the abolition of the afternoon shift, the bulk of the proprietors are determined against abolition. Indications point to a long struggle. BRISBANE, July 25. The Amalgamated Society of Engineers has demanded an increase in pay for members working on the railways, a reduction of hours to 44 weekly, and other concessions. A strike is threatened.
