SLUGGISH RIVER DRAINAGE BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Sluggish River Drainage Board was held oh Thursday. Present: Trustees Macauley (chairman), W. Anion, and J. Lucae. An apology for absence was received from Trustee Kendall. _ I The Minister of International Affairs wrote stating that the petition of Messrs Thomson and Wilson, for the inclusion of subsections 20-24 in the Board's district, had been received, and would be duly considered. Messrs Cooper and Ruthcrfurd forwarded a request that a culvert on the south branch of the drain be removed and. notifying that the Oroua Drainage Board would take legal action if the request was not complied with.—The secretary read a reply to this letter, and pointed out that a ietter had been sent the Oroua Board in January last, in reference to the original erection of the culvert, to which letter no reply had been received. He had embodied a copy of that letter in reply to the letter now before the Board.—The secretary's reply was approved by the meeting. Mr E. J. Wilde wrote, stating that the main drain bank on his side of the drain should have been constructed at the original elevation recommended by the engineer to the now defunct Board, and disapproving of the action of the then land occupiers in petitioning for a reduced elevation. Ho also wrote, stating that a flood gate to an exit drain was not closing satisfactorily, and, further, requested that the drain bank ba made up to the original elevation.—The secretary was instructed to reply, setting forth the Board's position in respect of this matter. The engineer informed the Board that Messrs Clark and Box wero prepared to provide two-thirds of the cost of cutting the suggested deviation of the old Sluggish creek.—lt was resolved: "That the Board is not of the opinion that it ehould provide any portion of the cost, but if Messrs Box and ('lark desired that the cut be made, and will contribute the whole coat, and, if Mr Box will also give the Board an undertaking not to demand any compensation for a bridge crossing or for severance, the work can be carried out on the terms stated."

It wai decided to clear Mather's drain. The engineer was instructed to giv« Messrs Wilson and Mearns notice to complete their contract on Lane's drain. Mr Johnston (Baincsse) waited upon the Board, asking that arrangement* be made lo have the mill and railway drains deepened by one foot in his land, and to have the culvert on the Baincsse road lowered to meet requirements. —The engineer was instructed to meet Mr Johnston on the ground and advise the Board on the requests. Mr Thompson waited on the Board to bring under its notice that water from the new settlement in the Kopane was conducted into the Longburn-Rangotea road drain. and from there on to the lands of the complainant. H« asked the Board to communicate with the Oiv.ua Drainage Board, with the ebject of getting that Board to approach the Manawatu County Council with a request to make suitable provision for the removal of the water.—The request is to be complied with. | Account? amounting io £123 were p„6EcJ for payment.
