Gunning moved: "That it is preferable for the Dominion to contribute towards the British Fleet rather than a local navy." He was ably seconded by 1 Mr VV. Clayton, while the motion was opposed by the Rev. McKciizic. who was seconded by Mr H. Logan. The other speakers were Rev. Crawford. Messrs Fargher, Hensman and Trainer. The motion was carried by 17 votes to 6. Next week the Society will indulge in a Mayoral election. The Shannon Men's Hockey Hub l»eat the Levin B team on the Recreation Reserve on Wednesday by 5 goals* to 1. The. Miranui mill, which has lx>en closed down for some time, will reopen on the 15th inst. Several improvement* havo been effected during the jjcriod tlie mill has been closed. An area haa been cleared jn front of the mill, which is to be planted m flax. The Whitanui mill will close down on Saturday, probably for six weeks,' during which time a new cable will lx> erected across tho Manawatu for the purpose of conveying the green flax across. The cable will bo supported bv two steel towers, designcd by Mr Greig. The whole of the const motion has lxrn carried out at the mill. The cable will be anchored on each side of the river in thirty tons of concrete. The steel towers will stand a pressure of <5 tons without buckling. The chief advantage'accruing from this improvement. will be that the green leaf can be convey. Ed across during the time that the river w in flood. Tho re-building of the Temukanui mill at lokomnru is progressing. The lower portion of the new building is to be constructed of brick, to resist, ire.
