THE CARNIVAL.
Tho Carnival Committee met last night, Mr J. A. Nash in tho chair. Mr C. H. Allen wrote offering to donate the crown for the Queen of the Carnival, which was accepted with thanks. Mr A. Tonkin donated four coronets for the ladies-in-wait-ing. Mr J. Mitchell offered to supply the committee with badges for the Carnival. The next meeting will be held on June 25th. The first sociafand dance held by the Carpenters and Joiners' Carnival Committee, at the Oddfellows' Hall, on Wednesday evening, proved a splendid success, about 70 couples being present. Tho duties of M.C. wore carried out most Satisfactorily by Messrs Dalton and Burns. Tho supper was in the hands of the ladies' committee, and was very well attended to, despite counter attractions. Tho committee are to be congratulated on the success of tho gathering. They intend to hold another social and dance in the near future. The pianist for the evening was Mr Have, extras being played by Miss Charker. A very successful dance was hold by the Foresters in their hall last night, the proceeds from which were devoted to the Friendlv Societies' Queen of .Carnival candidate (Miss Taylor). During the evening Mr Walter Young sang a parody on the once famous "Pay. Pay" song, which resulted in over £1 being secured for votes. Dancing was k?pt up till an early hour in the morning, and a very enjoyable time spent bv those present. Tho Loyal Manawatu Lodge are holding a dance in their hall. Cuba street, to-night, in aid of the Friendly Societies' candidate. The services of a good musician have been scoured, and a« the floor is in good order an enjovable time should be spent. At the Newbury Social Hall last evening there was a very satisfactory attendance of dancers. Mr J. Small presided at tho piano, and the music was all that could be desired. An extra was played by Miss N. Smith. The proceeds from the. gathering will go to support "The Sporting Candidate" (Miss Millar) for Queen of tho Carnival.
