DR. MAWSON'S EXPEDITION.

VALUE OF MINERAL RESOURCES

(By Electbic Telegraph—Copyright.) (Peb Press Association.)

MELBOURNE, March 6. Dr. Mavvson, speaking at a welcome, said the expedition had brought several tons of rock and mineral specimens, three or four hundred bird skins, and a number of mammals of the seal type. They obtained indications of a large area of coal. At present they could not estimate the commercial value of the new lands, but they may have much, and it was only right, that Australia should have it, as Australian and British expeditions had accomplished practically all the work done there. Dr. Mawson stated that he had made exclusive arrangements with London papers for the main narrative. Ho, however, supplied certain news to the Australian papers, and as a result, his whole contract with London had been cancelled. INTERESTING ISLANDS. BREEDING GROUND OF RARE BIRDS AND SEALS.

Received March 6, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, March 6.

Mr Hurley, the photographer of Dr. Mawson's expedition, gives an interesting description of the MacKellar Islands, a group a. few miles north of Mawson's main base, which was a great breeding ground for seals, rare nulls, petrels, and penguins. It was estimated that 150.000 Adelie penguins were breeding in the group at the time of the visit.
