Id the House of Commons, Mr Acland stilted that the British Consul at Coma had. been ordered to San Salvador in connection with the Bowskill case. Portugal was facilitating enquiries to the utmost. Renter's correspondent* states that dhe Acting-Covernor at San, Salvador states that Mr Bowskill was arrested for acting as the leader of a disaffected lot of natives in a recent revolt. He allowed the mission station to he used, as a base Irom which to besiege the Portuguese fort. LONDON. March 5. The Baptist Missionary Society has received advices irom Matadi that in the middle ol February, shortly after peace was declared. following Mr Bow-.-.kill's efforts for mediation, Portuguese officials arrested a number of native Christians. The effect was electrical, and war was. renewed. San Salvador was bhrnt and., the Portuguese were drieen within the fortress. Those besieged are short of water, and the insurrectionists shoot everyone trying to the water. The who!* country is excited. Mr Bowskill told Paulo, ;\ Portuguese official in charge of the lortress. that his action had inflamed the country and Paulo detained Mr Bowskill. HIS RELEASE ORDERED. A recent message from Lisbon stated that, accordi ig to Portuguese dispatches, the natives at San Salvador had revolted against ])ayment of the taxes, and entrenched themselves in the mis-don building.- against the missionaries' wiP. Mr Bowskili's alleged arrest was merely an invitation to remain at the disposal oi the authorities ponding the (Governor's arrival. The mis•ionaries deny that the rebels entered the premises.
