HOCKEY.

CANTERBURY LADIES BEAT SOUTHLAND.

(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 5. In the ladies hockey match Canterbury beat Southland }>v 4 to 2. The game was fast and interesting on the whole, and though there was some tendency to individual play on both sides, the combination shown was. generally speaking, fair. Southland were unfortunate in having two goals scored against them bv the brisk Canterbury eleven befor?) they had properly settled down to play, and the game was not marked by any sustained advantage on either side, being full of reverses. Southland brightened up very much in the second spell, but. the Canterbury defence was too strong to enable them to turn the tables, although their attack wa« dashing.
