The schooner George Wells has been wrecked near Cape Hatteras. Twenty men, two women, and some children were rescued.

There is great havoc along the coast due to tho hurricane. It is reported that Ocracoke Island was swept by the storm, but there is so far no confirmation.

New York has been deluged by three inchea of rainfall. The subways are flooded, and business is temporarily suspended. Basements also are flodded. Electric pumps are being used to clear the aubways. .
