Several Borough Councils in the Dominion accept money from ratepayers on deposit at cali. paying interest up to 4 per cent. In this way the Borough overdraft is reduced, and the difference in interest saved. The Palmerston Borough Council discussed a suggestion last night that it should adopt a similar policy. The Mayor said the local office was managed most •conomically, and the taking of money on deposit would mean that extra clerical assistance would have to be engaged, probably costing £l5O or £2OO per annum. He doubted whether the saving of lj per cent interest on overdraft would coVcr this. He had gone into the figures, and found that it would be quite impossible for the present staff to undertake the additional work. Then there was the fact that money so might be required by the depositors without notice, which would neeesfitate going to the bank for the money. Cr. Broad did not think the additional work would necessitate the engagement of another clerk. Replying to Councillors who questioned whether 4 per cent need be offered for money at call, the Mayor pointed out that the Post Office paid 3;j per cent, and there were institutions in the town prepared to give 4 per cent. If the Borough Council wanted money deposited, it would have to offer at least 4 per cent, and it would thus only save lj per cent on the interest (5-i per cent) now paid 011 overdraft. When the bank rate fell to 5 per cent, the saving would be still less. No action was taken .by the Council in the natter.
