FITZHERBERT.

(From Oub Own Correspondent.)

The first euchre party of the feason was hold in tho local hall last Tuesday evening, and thoro was.a very good attendance of playors. Prizes wore won by Mrs Johnski and Mr West. At tho conclusion of the euohro tournament a, dance was held, music for which was provided by several local ladies and •gentlemen, including Mrs Pcdorson, Misses Kcrslako and Stnce, and Messrs Johnski _ and Scott. On tho wholo a, very enjoyable timo was spent by those present; Next Friday evening a social organised by the. ladies of tho district is to take place, and besides dancing and musical items thero arc various competitions on the programme, including nail-driving for tho ladies, hat-trimming for tho mon, a word-guessing competition, and many others.. Tho children are also to be provided with a bran-tub and "fish pond," and those will no doubt b'o well patronised during the. evening. Property still continues to change hands in Fitzhcrbert, Mr Hughes and Mr West, both of whom aro' recent arrivals in tho district, having disposed of their farms. The farmors of Tararua having been more fortunate during the past dry season in having many showers which did not fall on tho lowlands havo an abundancy of winter feed. The Tararua soil seems to be particularly suited for the growth of certain crops and vegetables, some good results having been obtained this last season. A short time ago you mentioned in one of your issues about somo romarkablo cabbages grown by Mr Pitt, of Tararua, and now Mr S. Blake has lately dug a crop of potatoes, which is a good record for the district. From a small plot of ground, 14ft by lift, ho bagged 2001b of potatoes, and as this works out at a little over 25 tons to the aero it certainly is a. good advertisement for the Range. Messrs Hall Bros, also cultivated _ somo of their land, at Tararua, and in spite of the long dry season produced a crop of rape over threo feet in height, which fattened at tho rato of fifty lambs to tho acre. Such results should be an encouragement to the other settlors on the Range.
