The Borough Council met last night to consider the estimates for the forthcoming year. There were present—The Mayor (Cr. J. A. Nash), and Crs. Armstrong, Haydon, Stubbs, Beale, Clausen, Nathan, McCarty, O'Reilly, and Mowlcm. After the estimates had been prepared by the Town Clerk, including work to be done during the current year, referred to the estimates by tho Council and other matters suggested by the Engineer, it was found that thero would bean increased debit balance of £IOOS 9s lid.

The Mayor explained that if it was proposed to carry out these- works, which wore nearly all a necessity, then it meant either increasing tho overdraft or in- . creasing the rates. He personally . objected to both, and asked the Council to consider tho advisability of taking a small public works loan to bo added to other proposals that the Council will have to deal with at a very early date. Several Councillors spoke, on tho pro. posal, and it was finally decided to adopt it. The loan will include tho following works:—Sewer extension, Cook street and Park road, from College street to near Linton street; Rangitikei street, fiom end of present sewer to Keeling street; Morris, Fitzroy, and Alfred streets; Fitzhorbert street, from Park road to Sports Ground. It was decided also to include a sum for the fencing of the Scandia street pit. A sum of £ls was allocated as a subsidy for the Salva. tion Army Band, also £lO towards the District Nurse Fund. Some discussion took place regarding a proposal from the Mayor that £IOO bo I placed on the .estimates for the employ- > ment of an electrical expert to report on • the system of trams for the town.
