MEN'S FREE SOCIAL CLUB.

CONCERT AND CONVERSAZIONE.

A fair number of people 1 attended the concert and conversazione hold in tho Municipal',, Hall last evening to raise funds to furnish the Men's* Free Social Glub's hew rooms, in the'old ; : Firo.Brigade Station, •„■'... ' * ,f >

Tho Mayor presided, and said' that this' was tho first of tt series• of concerts the committee intended, to.hold during the winter. He thanked the- members of the band and the conductor for their assistance both in playing, before .arid; during tho concert, and on his motion a hearty vo!e of thanks was accorded to them. The evening was pleasantly passed with speeches and vocal items, and at a suitable interval supper was, handed round by a number of young men, who were under tho supervision of Mrs Rawlins. The evening's entertainment terminated with an impromptu _ dance, tho music for which was contributed by Misses Parker and Drew and Mr Hanley's orchestra. ,

In the courso of a brief the Mayor referred to Miss Glendinning's efforts to form the Men's Free Social Club v That lady had worked very hard indeed for the Club, and was successful in getting it established. From his own observations, the conduct, of tho boys and men who'frequented the Club had been very good. ' Now that the Club had been successfully formed, Miss Glendinning wished to nand over the Club to the young men of Palmerston to manage, and he thought that Miss Glendinning was'entitled to be relieved of tho management of tho institution. He hoped'that the Council would grant the Club the use of the ground floor of the old Fire Station, and,ho personally would support tho matter when it came before the Council, The W.G.T.U. had promised to entertain the members at a coffee supper on the opening night in the new building, ond had also given a donation of £2 to the funds, Ho believed that the Club would - become very popular, and would confer a boon upon the young men of the town. He urged upon those who had taken the jjvork up to give it their earnest attention, and to convince the Council and town, that it would be of personal advantage to the men of the town and district. Mr D. Buick, M.P., thought that it was a great pity that there was not a better attendance when the funds were for so deserving an object. He eulogised Miss Glendinning's good work in connection with the Club, and pointed out that she had been able to get tho young men to work with her. He was sure that Miss Glindinning would always bo proud of the Club which she had worked so hard to establish. Tho time was not far 'distant when tho people' of Palmerston would look with pride on tho Men's Free Social Club, and it would then bo seen what Miss* Glendinning had done, He had been informed that the leading business men had promised to help both in the management and tho financial affairs of tho Club. Mr W.F. Durward also spoke of Miss Glendinning's good work. He was sorry | that thero were not more Councillors present, as he thought they should take an interest in the movement. Ho also thought that tho Council should provide some of the furniture for the building. On the motion of the Mayor a hearty vote of thanks wa6 accorded Miss Glendinning tor what she had dono in the interest; of the young men of Palmerston. During tho evening tho following programme of vocal items was given, for which, at tho close of the concert, the contributors were accorded a vote of thanks:—Song, Mr E. C. Pees; reading, Miss Mailman; recitation, Mr Olliver; piano 6010, Mi6s Ilcna Grant; and violin solo, Master Grant, Mr Fellowes gave several ventriloquist items, and Mr Hanley's band also contributed materially to tho evening's enjoyment.
