THE HOLIDAYS.
On Monday and Tuesday most of. the residents of the district will keep holiday, and if they do not enjoy themselves it will certainly not be because no opportunity is afforded them. Amusements will be ae varied as they are numerous. In town there will be the Naval and Military Tournament on Monday, and it is generally an-, ticipated that it will prove one of the events of the year. The presence of so many military contingents, with all the panopy of glorious peace, as well as of war, has invested the town during the past few days with a gar-rison-like appearance that distinctly appeals to the military inclined. At Ashhurst on Monday the members pf the various Friendly Societies, together with their wives, sisters, cousins, : aunts, etc., will hold high revel in the picturesque Aehhurst Domain, to which numerous' special trains will convey the happy picnickers. The first will leave Palmereton at 9.40 a.m., and will' be followed by another at 10.20 a.m. They will stop at all stations, returning from Ashhurst at 5.30, 6.5, and 6.25 p.m. The fares have been fixed at: Adults 2s, children Is, including admission to the grounds. The Ashhurst Brass Band will be in attendance. The Friendly Societies' Council this year has spared no effort to make the picnic a success, and there is 'little doubt that, with fine weather, it will come up to expectations. A luncheon booth will be on the grounds, hundreds of toys have been purchased for the children, and an excellent sports programme dra\vn up. At Bulls the Rangitikei Racing Club will hold its annual summer meeting, and indications point to it being quite as successful as its predecossors.
