Harry Pearce, who defeated William Webb, in the sculling race on the Wanganui river on Boxing Day, left for Sydney by the Manuka last evening.

Mr and Mrs G. Ward, pld residents of Palmerston, have left for Rotorua and Auckland. Mr Ward has-been in failing health for some time, and it is hoped that a three-weeks' stay at Rotorua will prove beneficial.

Mr E- Jackson, after fourteen years' service with the. New Zealand Farmers' Dairy Union, seven years of which has been spent in the Eketahuna factory, has severed his connection with the firm, to take a position as supervising first assistant at the Wanganui Dairy Company's Aramoho factory.

Lieut.-Colonel Knight, of the Salvation Army, has been appointed to the command of the Federal Training College, Melbourne, and will be succeeded in the North Island of New Zealand by Lieut.Colonel Birkinshaw, who has been principal of the Training College for the past seven years. This is a popular appointment, Col. Birkinshaw being a most capable officer.

The' lato Ajthur Littlejohn, who wae drowned in the Wanganui river during tho week, was the 3 r oungest son. of the late Mr H. Littlejohn, in business in Pahnerston twenty years ago as a watchmaksr.. Deceased, who was aged 15 years, was living in Wanganui with his mother. He has a brother, Robert, in Palmerston, with whom, together with other members of the family, the greatest sympathy has been expressed. The funeral" will take place to-morrow at 2.30 p.m.

The death occurred at Himatangi on Sunday of Mr William Hutchison (Ornamental Bill), one of Foxton's old and wellknown identities. ■ The late Mr Hutchison had not enjoyed the best of .health for some time past, and on Wednesday last, as he appeared worse, medical aid was summoned. For the next • few days he seemed better, but on Sunday suffered a relapse and passed away. The deceased was 61 veare" of age, having been born at Darlmghurst, England, in 1849. He was an engineer by trade, passing his examinations at the Gainsford Academy, where he spent four years. Upon qualifying as an engineer he joined the ironclad "Mahomed Ali" as second engineer. Subsequently he had charge of Messrs Bland and Co.'s erecting shop at Stock-ton-on-Tees, where over 400 hands were employed. He came to the Dominion in the ship "Fern Glen" in 1876, and was employed by Messrs E. ;W. Mills and Co. and Mr Seager. In . 1886 he took charge of .Messrs Bell' Bros. sawmHls at Kereru (Koputaroa), where he remained four. years. . He. was afterwards' engaged supervising the erection of the machinery at other mills in the district, and came to iFoxtoii in 1893 Under engagement to Mr George Coley. The late Mi- Hutchison held first class engineer's certificates, and was looked , upon as one of the cleverest men with machinery in the district. .The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon.'
