SPORTING.

NOTES.

Br "Gebaint."

Sporting matters during the past, week have given place entirely -;to matters agricultural and pastoral. The Show itself Is, however, still • remarkably deficient in providing -"copy" from the thoroughbred point of view- Classes were,, as usual very weak numerically, a state .of the,. Association appears '.qjuifce unable to cope with, despite its ' and constant "endeavours to djo so. There were, only three thoroughbred sires shown, i Conqueror,; MarteHo, aiid. ..Battleaxe. Conqueror was in ex-i qellent- fettlef-as were,.-each, of the ,other® H-and proved 'much' too strong for' the opposition. He is a~very attractive Show

ring horse, and'his years sit lightly?'upon him. It may be remembered that he was also successful in his class last year. Martello was looking bright and healthy, but has not furnished as well as one would expect. This is, however, a detail that time will correct. He is full of quality, and bred as he is should prove a valuable sire. Battleaxe (TorpedoParlour Maid) was not pitted against the other two, and he got away with first prizesi in the classes for siree best calculated to get army remounts, weightcarrying -hacks and carriage horses. He took the special prizes donated by the Wellington Racing Club for sires most I likely to improve the breed of horses generally. The opposite class for mares also for special prizes presented hy the Wellington Racing Club was won by Mr S. .J. Sanson's Nancy, Mr R. Hayes' Maggie being second. The latter claims Guncotton as her sire, but the name of Nancy's did not transpire. Under the conditions suggested by the Wellington Racing Club, when allotting the special prizes, mares need not necessarily be thoroughbred. Neither of these were. There was only one thoroughbred filly in the Show, Bawbee, by Waipawa from Rouble, a mare that Mr Gaisford senr. used to race, and he also subsequently purchased Waipawa for stud duties. Bawbee was awarded first prize in her class. The list numerically was a sorry one indeed, and it is quite evident owners of thoroughbred stock will not take the trouble to show. There were no colts entered. lin and within an • easy radius of Palmerston there are owners who could have made a really excellent' show without drawing on any of their present racing stoclr, and it is a great pity they will not take the trouble to assist the Association in its work.

Mr F. Attfield has eased up his colt Bonnie Boy in his work, lowing to" the youngster growing so fast. He is looking very well, but under the circumstances it is more than probable it will be well into the autumn before he will make his bow to the public. Eclipta, who recently foaled a promising colt to Sir Laddo, will visit De Witte this year. Mr D. Buick, Ml P., has also decided to send several of his Papakura mares to De Witte. Jeanne D'Arc visits Gold Crest this season. Excellent reports reach me of a very fine yearling by Achilles from The Shannon, which is stated to be one of the most promising and best looking youngsters on the coast. She is ownea by Mr J. R. McDonald, of Levin. A colt by Sir Laddo from Cecile has joined the active brigade at Levin. He is owned" by Mr F. Easton, of Foxton. H. Telford has girt both Brilliancy and San Lass in good going order at Levin, and on appearances they should each do well at forthcoming meetings. * A new aspirant in the shape oi a youngster by Strowan from Miss Riwake has lately joined J. Hathaway's stable. Marathon in the same stable is doing promising work. Seaweed is another of those trained at Awapuni that is looking very forward. He has shown a decided - partiality for short courses, and is likely to be more than useful this season.

F. Carmont has got a good team together at Levin. Excellent reports are heard concerning the full-sister to the defunct Tawhera, who is stated to look nice. The full-sister tcf Sir Frisco is also/ highly spoken of, and shows most promising form. She is just as good looking as her handsome brother. So far she has. not been seen out, but it is quite likely will make her debut at the Manawatu summer meeting. The colt which Mr T. Bevan purchased from Mr T. Tancred, when the latter disposed of his horses, is displaying good form on the tracks, and it will indeed be astonishing if he does not gallop. W. Batten, who was for some time in F. Carmont's stable; has joined W. Price at Wangaaiui. Vr Lee is now doing Carmont's light work. The non-success of Boanerges in the Stewards' Handicap on Saturday was a severe blow- to punters, the Pilgrim's Progress colt being well supported, both straight out amd in doubles. So far the Highden stable has not repeated the successes of the Grand National meeting. C.J.C. MEETING. TO-MORROW'S ACCEPTANCES. (Pee Pbksb Association.') CHRISTCIIURCH, Nov. 8.
