MINING NEWS.
THE WAIHI MINE. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AT LOW "LEVEE. (Poet Correspondent.) WAIHI, Oct. 4. Shares in the Waihi Goldmining Company, which changed hande at £6 6s 6d on Friday last, the lowest figure touched for some consider able time, recovered again on Saturday to sales at £6 11s. Recent mine developments have, not been responsible for the fall in prices: in fact it may be said that operations at the 1000 ft level during the past week or two point to : mprov •> Iment rather than, deterioration ln.t'w values of the main lodes. Aftor determining the width, of the , Edward reef at the point of intersection in the low level, a start- was made to drive both ways on the course of the lode, and for the distance driven on either side of the crosscut ore of payable quality has been followed. As stated in the cable message sent to London on Friday last, the average value for 35ft iri the drive south vas £3 4eper ton, and for the balance, ot the distance eince driven the appearance of : the- ore points to its o*iug quite equal to, if not, better than iho section q eampled. The,, Martha going west: alsa looks , better, and. m the present face should give satisfactory values. The drive on the lode in this section is in close touch .with the poiriV where the Martha at, the level, overhead (No, 8 plan, level) carries a strong, chute of pay ore,.; one of the. stopes on the block a width of upwards of 40ft of quartz worth about £4 per ton. The work preparatory to opening up the mine at greater depth, including the installation ot pumping plant, etc., is now well torward, and in the course of a few days the management will probably be in a position to commence the work ot driving for the Empire reef at the 1150 ft level.
