SESSIONAL NOTES.
AN AUCKLAND PARTY. BILL AGAINST BOOKMAKERS. (By, Parliamentary Repeesentative.) WELLINGTON, June 30. A political conference of Auckland members on railway matters has 'been convened for 11 o'clock to-morrow morning. _ It .has been decided to restrict the meeting to Auckland members; and not to _ make it a North Island Conference as originally intended. The reason for this is that one or two Wellington members have openly stated their objection to the conference, and so a, preliminary meeting of Auckland representatives only has been called. The movement is viewed with much disfavour by the South Island members. A Canterbury representative, speaking to your reporter, said: "Auckland is going to do itself great injury, and the result will not be the North versus the South Island, but Auckland versus the rest of New Zealand. Auckland attempts to grab everything at the expense of the rest of the Do- ; minion." Mr Newman (Manawatu) this afternoon asked leave to introduce a Bill to prohibit the licensing of bookmakers. The proposal will receive the unanimous support of the Opposition. The policy of the Government, as outlined in the speech from the Throne, amply forecasted amendments to the Gaming Act.
