SHANNON.
(From Ocr Own Correspondent.) Messrs W. Law and A. Ware leave here shortly for an extended trip to Australia. Mr Arcus was the successful tenderer for the erection of the new school at Makerua, the price being £251. Messrs Jones and Gibson, from Levin, visited the 1.0. G.T. o/i Monday night, as representatives of the Otaki Electoral NoLicense League to discuss the proceedings for the next electoral campaign. It was decided to form a branch of the League in Shannon and the surrounding districts. . The grant for Shannon Post Office expires to-day. Nothing has been heard about any improvements or a new -building, so it is natural to suppose that the residents will have to start all over again to get what has been recognised by the authorities as a necessity. The chief feature at the Methodists winter garden fete next month will be the performance of a cantata entitled "Soot and the, Fairies" by children, for which Mrs A'. Saunders is at present training them. Despite the bad night a large number turned, up for journal night at the Debating Society's meeting on Tuesday night. Mr Galland, the editor, read the papers, which were nineteen in number. Nine were poems, mctetly of a humorous character. One paper, entitled "A meeting of Shannon Borough Council," evoked a good deal of laughter. "Hints for Debaters" was very instructive, and would bo worth printing for future reference. The editor a very good leader on the necessity of an institute of some description for Shannon, so that young men would have some place to spend the evening. (I might mention | that Shannon would have had a Mechanics' Institute years ago if our paternal Government hadn't appropriated the site to build*a post office on.) Next week's debate is being looked forward to keenly. ,The three G's. are in stricttraining.
