DEALING WITH ROUGH PLAY. (Feb Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, June 29. The Wellington Rugby Union recently suspended a player named J. Marshall for four playing Saturdays for striking an opponent in a match. The Manage*ment • Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union at its last meeting expressed astonishment at the lightness of this sentence and , increased it to disqualification for two years. The ; Management Committee; of the Wellington Union to-night -resented this,' arid resolved to appeal on - the ground that•the sentence is excessive. Some speakers tonight asserted that Marshall had been seriously provoked, and the opinion "was expressed that the New Zealand Union oommittee had taken action without first ascertaining the fact, and that, this sort of>thi*ig was likely'to drive players into the, ; Northern Union ' League. 1 A' 'fight between two Association football players last Saturday was discussed at a meeting *of the Wellington Football Association to-night. One .of the' offerid|ers; was disqualified for-: four •* Saturdays ' and the other for the rest of the season.

GOOD WIN FOR THE MAORIS. FORTY 1 TO THREE. (Bv Electbio Telegbaph—Copsbiqht.I (Peb Pbess Association.) SYDNEY, June 29. At Gbulbourn the Maoris defeated the Southern Districts Iby 40 to' 3. Heavy rain fell ~ during play, and' the ground was slippery. The visitors completely outclassed the local team. In the first spell, assisted by a strong wind, the Maoris rattled up 26 to nil. The game wa,s a willing one, and some of the local team were good in individual play, but their''combination was faulty. AMERICAN'S FIRST WIN. . SYDNEY, June 29. - The American footballers had their •first, win of the'tour, beating the Hunter Kiver District by 10 to 9. RANGITIKEI (12) MANAWATU (8). Mr J. Pawson's annual visit to _Ran--gitikei with a team of footballers picked from the local clubs took place yesterday. The combination was not as strong as had been hoped for. At the last moment two of the players failed to get away. The match was played at Bulls on a greasy ground, the ball, thus becoming rather difficult to handle. McKewen skippered the Manawatu team, which played in black'. Play was fast and open ail through, and the result was not altogether an .indication of the play, which, if; anything, favoured Manawatu. 'Half-way through -the-' first spell the opening score was registered by Parkes for Rangitikei, the player dribbling over the line and scoring near the corner. Manawatu replied . through the agency of Munro, who scored by a similar dribbling process. Ramsden, after an unsuccessful attempt to get over, made another fine run, and scored; McKewen converted, and at half-time Manawatu led by Bto 3. The game in :the second half was very even, and it was only near the end that the home team got to work in real earnest. Tapsell kicked two good penalty goals, and Illston got over from a loose dribbling rush, the result being that Rangitikei's score rose to 12 as against Manawatu's 8. Mr -Geon. Pownall, 'of 'Wanganui, refereed.
