HALLEY'S COMET.
A writer in the Hawko's Bay Herald says: — The following table showing the relative movements of Halley's Comet and tho sun has been compiled to allow the interested observer to obtain the maximum number of observations with the least possible. inconvenience. Until tho comet draws much nearer there will be iittle chance of seeing it during the hour preceding sunrise. The figures refer to the head of the comet. The tail, being directed away from the sun, will, of course, be first above tho horizon; and during tho week preceding the transit, a part of it will be visible 2, 3, <5r even 6 hours before the head. At 3 o'clock on the afternoon of April 20th, tho comet will have reached its nearest to the sun and will bogin again its long journey into space. A month later it will pass within fifteen million miles of the earth. Venus, bright as sho is at present in tho morning sky, is yet some sixty million miles from us. The head of the comet will pass across the disc of the sun on-May 19th. .Should its course coincido with a diameter of the disc, it would take 1 hour to complete tho transit. Up to this time the comet will be visible in the morning sky, I but afterwards only in the evening, when, from being a bright, conspicuous object, it will melt away, as every day will put a million miles- at least between us. The t'imes of sunrise and sunset aro taken from tho Hawke's Bay Almanack. The rest is based on Dr. Smart's Ephemeris. Wo would suggest the ISth as tho probable date of the comet's first appearance.
At midday tho comet passes across the sun to appear -in the evening sky.
