THE ASHHURST VISIT.
POWELKA'S LUCK
Fortune seemed to favour Powelka in his Ashhurst escapade. Every morning when Mrs Wilson and Mrs Powelka visited their house it was their custom to search the place, and particularly to look under the bed. But on Saturday morning, when the object of their search was actually in that hiding place, they found the lock had been tampered with. They called Mr Lumley to help them force- tho door open, and quite forgot to look into the bedroom. They removed their hats and went out to the yard to fix the well-rope. Mrs Powelka heard a noise in the house, and thought it was the cat moving about. She asked her mother to go in and see what was the matter. She did so, and met her son-in-law. In the pocket of the coat left behind at Ashhurst was found the piece of wire with which Powelka picked the lock of the door. Powelka is said to be a man of great strength, and when working at the abattoirs he was accustomed to lift a 3001b side of beef and to /handle two 901b carcases, one in each hand, with ease.
