OLD MAN PERISHES.

At a fi.ro which occurred in a fourroomed dwelling in Alexandra street, Richmond, this morning, the owner and occupier of the premises, D. Buckett,. 50 years of age, a"n old resident and a; bricklayer and plasterer by trade, wasburned to death. Bucketfc's wife and' family are at present away in the Northi Island, and the neighbours were unaware that the house was occupied. They assumed that Buckett was out of town ort a shooting expedition. Apparently _noone observed the fire until the building , : was a mass of flames. It was only when the Fire Brigade were turning over the> debris after the firo was got under that they came upon Buckett's charred remains. The Brigade received an alarms • from the telephone exchange at 3.15 a.m., but the building was beyond salvation when they arrived. The building , and contents were insured in the London, Liverpool, and Globe office, but tho? amount is luiascertainablc; BUSINESS PREMISES ABLAZE. CHRISTCHURCII, April Iff, Another fire occurred at 5.50 a.m. to v day in business promises in High street, near the corner of Cashol street, consisting of throe stories and the basement. Wallace and Co., chemists, occupied the ground floor and basement. The first floor was occupied as consulting , rooms by Drs. O'Brien and Duncan, Dr. Newell (dentist), and Michaels (oculist), and the second floor by Wright, mueic teacher. The fire originated in a small room staircase on the first floor, used for storing bicycles, coal and odds and ends. This flat was severely damaged by fire. The contents of the basement' were considerably damaged by .water, and the remainder of tho building much damaged by heat and smoke. Tho premises were owned by Mrs W. Darby and insured for £5500 in the United and £1000 in the Royal Exchange Office. Wallace and Co 's stock was insured as follows:—£2soo in the North Queensland, £1900 in tho Royal Exchange, and £1000 in tho London. Liverpool and Globe, £1000 in the Now Zealand, and £550 in the Victoria Office. Newell was insured for £300 in the State Office, Dr. O'Brien for £50 in tho Alliance Office,, and Wright for £250 in the State Office. FIRE AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, April 11. An outbreak of firo occurred in house in Grey street, _ occupied by Mr& Davis, on Saturday night. It'was subdued by the brigade vvhon three rooms: were destroyed. In consequence of a. report that there wore three children in , the back part of the house Supt. Woolley and Doputy-Supt. Berry proceeded' to investigate. They sustained burns and other injuries, tho former beingslightly injured. Borry was severely burned. It transpired that tho children had boon removed to another house.
