Sergt. Maguirc, who has been transferred to Palmerston vice Sergt. Stagpoolc, arrived in town this afternoon from Wellington. Miss Rosina Buckman, the New Zealand soprano whose people used to live in this district, is warmly praised for her performance in Puccini's opera, "Madame Butterfly," played for the first time in Sydney on Easter Saturday night. The Telegraph says: "The occasion was remarkable for the brilliant performance of Mile. Bel Sorel in the title role and for the individuality of Miss Rosina Buckmann in the important part of the maid Suzuki. . . Miss Buckmann's excellent performance was notable for its strong dramatic interest, for she fully bore her share of the sombre scenes in which Suzuki is called upon to support the star." The position with reference to the arrears of income tax is becoming very serious (writes a London correspondent under date February 18th). According to the Treasury figures just issued the receipts from April Ist to the end of last week had amounted to only £10,875,000,■ and there are only six weeks and four working days to the end of the year. As the estimate for the whole year was £37.100.000. it follows that the huge sum of £26,225,000 niust be obtained before the end of March, if the Chancellor's Budget estimate is to be realised. The collection is almost at a standstill at present. Whereas in the corresponding week of 1909 tho amount received was £2,658,000, last week only £800,000 was paid into the Exchequer, a very trifling contribution. The receipts are now nearly £10,000,000 in arrears, as compared with the progress made last year, and by the time the Budget is passed this sum will apparently have greatly increased, as each week that elapses makes the position worse. The discrepancy is in great measure due to the fact that people are not paying income tax until it is definitely demanded, and as the Budget is not yet law. no pressure is being put upon them to pay up.
