A London cable reports the death of Mr T. Corbett, member for Down North.

The death is reported from Dtinedin of Mr Maitland Gardner, a well-known musician and teacher.

The directors of tho Bank of New Zealand have elected Mr Harold Beauchamp chairman of the Board for tho ensuing financial year.

Sergeant Smart, of Hastings, on retiring on superannuation, was presented this week with an illuminated address and a purse of one hundred guineas by the townspeople and a marble clock by members of the police force.

Mr F. N. Jones, an old Nelsonian, and well known in Marlborough and on the W T est Coast as a sporting man, died suddenly from heart disease this morning. This is the third sudden death of well-known residents of Nelson in a week. The Mayor has been invited by tho Stratford branch of the Salvation Army to preside at a Jarge gathering to be held there on the 2let inst. in aid of the Hospital and Army funds, but owing to business pressure he is unable to accede to the request.

A telegram from Christchurch states that Arnst, the champion sculler, left there last, night for Wellington, where he joins the Mocraki, leaving for Sydney to-day. Prior to leaving Australia for South Africa, to meet Ernest Barry on the Zambesi, he takes part in the big handicap race on the Paramatta this month. Jack Arnst leaves for Sydney next week, and accompanies his brother to South Africa as his trainer.

St. James's Anglican Church, Sydney, was the scene on March 15 of tho marriage of Miss Myrtle Amelia Staco, third daughter of Mr T. W. Staco, "Te Matai," Palmerston .North, now residing at Burwood. Sydney, and Mr A. Lee Wikon TacaJiberry, "M.D., fourth son of Mr Samuel B. Tackaberry, solicitor, Poik County, Texas, U.S.A. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Sidney Mareden, M.A. The' bride \yas given away by her father. Miss Linda Stace was bridesmaid and Master Gordon Stace acted as page. Among those present were Mr and Mrs C. W. Bannister, Miss Mabel Bannister, Mrs Snelson and Mrs Linton. After a, short honeymoon in tho Blue Mountains, Dr. and Mrs Tackaberry leave Australia, for America.

To the already long list of names of distinguished New Zealand students who graduated at Edinburgh Universitynames including those of Truby King, Jeffcoat, Barnett, Beattie, Leighton, Herring, Barclay—that of Dr.. Champtaloup has to be added, says a London correspondent. Dr. Sydney T. Champtaloup left London in March to take up his new appointment of Bacteriologist and Lecturer on Public Health, Otago University, Dunedin, and Government Medical Officer of Dunedin. A successful social gathering of the Australasian Club was held at the University last week, when the president, Professor Gerald Leighton, also a New Zealander, welcomed the ■guests, and on behalf of the members made a presentation to Dr. Champtalotip.. Professor Leighton referred to the "brilliant academic-career of the new professor.
