EDUCATION BOARD.

A -special meeting of the Wanganui Education soard was held on Tuesday evening. Present: —Messrs F. Pirani (chairman), F. Purnell, P. O'Dea, G. H. i3ennutt, F. M. S|>urdle, E. Dixon, and D. H. Guthrie. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs J. P. Aldridge and A. Fraser.

Accounts. —Accounts amounting to £646 6s Id were, passed for payment.

Resignations.—The ioilowing resignations were accepted:—F. Smith (_VLauuia), Ji. Pigott (College Street), M. McKcnzie (Koinako), A. McLaughlin (Mangatoki), J. Flyger (Ohakune), J. Coomb© (Feilding). Appointments. —The following School Committees wrote approving of_ appointments : —Eltham, Mr McKenzie; Taihape, Mr Poole; Taonui, Miss E. M. Mahony; Turakina, Miss F. S. Piercy; Ohangai, Air Lewis; Feilding. Miss Watts.

Leave of Absence. —The following teachers were grunted leave of absence: —J. K. Law (three weeks), E. P. Laird (four weeks), Miss Elmslie (six months). C. Henry's application for six months' leave of absence was refused.

Allowances. —Tho Board's solicitors advised that tho Board had no power to make allowances to secondary teachers. — Decided to send a, copy of the letter to headmasters of secondary schools. Grants.—Tho Education Department wrote notifying the following grants — Half cost of new site at Marton; residence at Manganoho; additions to "residences at Otakeho, Riverlea, Makotuku. and Beaconslield. Except in the case of Beaconsfteld, the grants were all loss than the sums applied for. Navy League Maps.—The Education Department wrote offering 21 maps to bo paid for in advance. —Decided to order the maps. College Street. —Decided to carry out repairs suggested. Cheltenham. —The Board approved of the school being closed for one week on account of whooping-cough. Parewanui. —Tho Board agreed to the dinner-hour being cut down to half an hour. School Hours. —The Board agreed to the alteration of the opening hour to 9.30 o'clock at Pukeokahu and Tiritea. Feilding.—Decided to make application to the Gov.-.nmonr. for u room for secondary classes. The Chid;'nan was authorised to accept a tender for the painting of Waitehi School. Carnarvon. —Dccided that the Board would grant £7 towards, the erection of a shelter-shed. It was also decided to supply a new 400-gallon tank. Kakariki. —Decided that the interior of the school be painted. Valley Road. —The matter of a site was left in tho hands of Mr Guthrie. Kairanga.—lt was decided to apply for additions to the school. Longburn.—The matter of fencing was referred to Mr Bennett.
