THE WELLINGTON MEETING. ARMLET WINS THE THOMPSON HANDICAP. (Peb Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 5. Ideal weather prevailed for the first day of the Wellington Racing Clnb's autumn meeting, and the attendance was very satisfactory. The course was in good order. Armlet received a great ovation after winning the Thompson Handicap. The sum of £12.469 10s was invested on the totalisator, as against £11,538 last year. Bookmakers' fees amounted to £352. Following are the results: — First Hurdle Race, of 200 sovs; 15 miles. —C. B. Pharazyn's Longner. 9.9 1; Whatakura 2, Audax 3. Also started: Chase Mab. Audax led during the greater part of the race, but fell away before reaching the straight. Won by half a length. Time, 3.20 2-5. Waiwetu Handicap ; seven furlongs. — Sir Geo. Clifford's Sharpshooter 9.11 1, Truganini 9.7 2, Bollin 9.5 3. Also ran : Osiris, Swimming Belt, Laius. The first and second horses put up a good fight in the last few strides of the race. Marengo, Succession, Idealism, Penza, San Lass. The winner led shortly after entering the straight, and never left the issue in doubt, winning easily by two lengths, a neck between second and third. INVERCARGILL, April 6. The weather was cold, with light showers and a heavy gale, for the opening day of the Southland autumn meeting. The course was heavy, and the totalisator put through £4605, as against £3362 last season. There were twelve bookmakers, and their fees were £177. Results: — First Handicap Hurdles. —Royal Shell 1, Coy 2, Homeward 3. Won by a length. Time, 3.38. Southland Trot. —Vera Daplyn 1, Sir Christooher 2, Lady Maid 3. Time, 5.23 2-5.
