FIRE AT TIMARU.

■<»■— ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH DESTROYED. A GREAT BLAZE. (Peb Phess Association. , ) TIMARU, April 6. The Timaru Roman Catholic Church , was burned down early this morning. The , fire was tirst seen at aboiit 2.30, and it then had a good hold on the western portion of the church. As the building was about forty years old and built of wood the flames spread with remarkable speed, and within five minutes of the alarm it was seen that the church was doomed.

The Brigade got two leads to work, but the powerful jets had not the slightest effect on the flames.

At us height the conflagration was a magnificent spectacle, and for fully an hour the town was brilliantly lifc. The whole building and its valuable > contents in the way of church furniture wore completely destroyed. The church and contents were insured for 2,1500 in the Now Zealand office and' were valued at £3000.
